The focus of the yatra is to highlight the achievements of successive BJP governments in the state.

As the state assembly polls get closer, the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Congress are throwing their weight for the campaigning even as the Election Commission of India (EC) is likely to announce the poll dates in a week or so.

Last month, in September, Modi had visited Gujarat twice - first during the Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's visit and second on his birthday to dedicate the Sardar Sarovar Project to the Nation. On the second leg, he will connect with cooperative leaders in Central Gujarat, which is a hub of milk cooperatives. Shah said that it is the Congress party that is creating obstacles in the development of the state.

"The end of Congress in Gujarat in mid-nineties spelt the end of gundaraj (rule of goons)".

The BJP president said that the Assembly election in Gujarat will be held in the first week of December. "You need to remain with the people of Gujarat for their development", he said. The slogan has become the trademark of their agitation which began in 2015 during which 15 men from the community were killed in violent clashes with the police.

However, it failed to cut any ice with Hardik Patel - the face of the Patidar agitation - who has vowed to continue the stir until their quota demand is met.

Launching the yatra from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel's native place Karamsad in Gujarat, Shah said, "The BJP today launches Gujarat Gaurav Yatra from the same land of Sardar Patel from where he raised the voice of the farmers and started the work to unify the country".

In a gesture loaded with symbolism, Shah paid tributes to Patel at his ancestral home in Karamsad with Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and his deputy Nitin Patel in tow, before invoking icons of Gujarat, including Patel, Morarji Desai and Narendra Modi, to mount an offensive against the Congress.

Travelling through various parts of the states, both the legs will culminate on October 16 in the presence of Prime Minister Modi.
