"I would like to take this opportunity to thank Lou for his tireless work over the last three years as general manager", Shanahan said.

"I haven't begun that process and that's why nobody has been named", Shanahan said on a conference call after the team announced that Lamoriello would not be back as GM.

In Lamoriello's second season as GM, the Leafs improved by 11 wins in the standings and qualified for the playoffs for the first time in four seasons; and this past season, Toronto set a franchise record for standings points (105) while winning 49 games and pushing the Boston Bruins to seven games in their first-round playoff series this spring.

"My responsibility is right here with the Toronto Maple Leafs", said Lamoriello.

Lamoriello declined to discuss his future plans during the team's end-of-season availability last Friday.

The 75-year-old said he is most proud of the team's steady rise up the standings over his three-year run as GM. "Just handling one thing at a time".

Shanahan told media Monday he did not have a timetable for hiring a new GM, but with Lamoriello staying on as an advisor, the transition between Lamoriello and his replacement will be smooth and productive.

But that would mean Lamoriello and the Islanders show mutual interest, and that's currently a long way off - for now. "His leadership in helping establish a cultural foundation, as well as his invaluable mentorship to everyone in this organization, has been instrumental in our development".

In May 2017, the Maple Leafs granted Colorado permission to talk with Dubas, who was working as GM and alternate governor of the American Hockey League's Toronto Marlies.

Lamoriello's possible availability provided a glimmer of hope that the Islanders could swoop in and grab the Hall of Famer considering he has connections to the team.
