Raptors fire coach Casey after seven seasons

Saturday, 12 May, 2018

The Toronto Raptors have fired Dwane Casey coach after the team was swept in the playoffs by the Cleveland Cavaliers for the second straight season.

"After careful consideration, I have decided this is a very hard but necessary step the franchise must take", Masai Ujiri, Toronto's team president, said in a statement.

"I hope we can because you try to get those kind of players to fit that mode", Ujiri said.

Ujiri thanked Casey for what he's done for the organization, saying Casey was "instrumental in creating the identity and culture of who we are as a team".

Casey joined the Raptors in 2011 after spending the previous three seasons with the Dallas Mavericks as the assistant coach with the Dallas Mavericks.

He posted a 320-238 record during his span as head coach, including three 50-win seasons. ESPN believes that while former Atlanta Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer will receive a close look from the Raptors, Casey should end up being contacted by a number of teams. The former National Basketball Association big man came on as an assistant coach with the Raptors for the 2015-16 season and then transitioned to the Head Coach of the G-League's Raptors 905 the following year.

Casey was sacked two days after winning the Michael H. Goldberg coach of the year award, which is handed out by the National Basketball Coaches Association. Yet again, the team up north ran into LeBron James in the second round and got swept in four games, getting utterly embarrassed in the process. With Casey looking for a new home for the 2018-19 season, should the Bucks pursue him for their vacancy?

Per usual, Adrian Wojnarowski first reported the news. Less than one week after Stein's report, Casey is out of a job. Because then, Ujiri continues to praise Casey. The 2017-18 campaign was particularly stellar as Toronto won a team-record 59 games and earned the No. 1 seed in the East.

"We'll start that process right after I finish here", Ujiri said. But I guess their front office wants playoff success.

Unfortunately, they were never able to meet expectations in the playoffs, losing in the first round twice and not making it out of the Conference semi-finals either of the past two seasons.
