Israel captured east Jerusalem in the 1967 Mideast war and annexed it to its capital, a move not recognized by most of the worldwide community. Under interim peace accords, Palestinians exercise limited self-rule in the area, which they seek, along with the Gaza Strip, for a future state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The Israeli military on Thursday said it dropped leaflets across the Gaza Strip, warning residents to stay far from the Israeli border during a mass protest.

More than 120 Palestinian demonstrators have been killed in eastern Gaza by Israeli army gunfire - and thousands more injured - since the rallies began more than two months ago.

Shooting medics is a bit more embarrassing, particularly a photogenic medic like Najjar who was in a lot of media coverage of paramedics risking their lives to treat wounded protesters.

Demonstrators also chanted anti-American slogans to condemn the US decision to move its embassy to Jerusalem.
