At least one group of former North Koreans now living in Canada say Trump's new willingness to foster closer ties with Kim are unsafe, and criticized the president for focusing on denuclearization rather than seeking answers about human rights in the country.

Weeks before the Trump-Kim summit, India had reached out to North Korea with minister VK Singh in Pyongyang last month in the first high-level visit since 1998.

During a sendoff ceremony at Pyongyang International Airport, Kim boarded a Chinese plane provided for his personal use after greeting senior officials who came to bid him farewell, KCNA reported. Donald Trump then guided Kim Jong-un to the library where the one-on-one meeting was to take place.

The statement provided little detail of what Trump and Kim committed to in terms of timeline and verification of denuclearization of the Korean peninsula and how many nukes Kim is sitting on. "And he has that opportunity, and he won't have that opportunity again".

Hannity had spent part of his show prior to the airing of his taped interview with Trump slamming media coverage of the meeting, specifically CNN's. "I think, honestly, [Kim] is going to do these things". The president also said the he trusts Kim will follow through, but won't admit if he got it wrong.

The report said the historic meeting marked a "radical switchover" in the two nations' fraught relations that had "lingered for the longest period on the earth".

More than 35,000 Americans were killed on the Korean peninsula during the war, with 7,700 of these United States troops still listed as missing in action - a lot of them in North Korea.

The summit between President Trump and Kim Jong-un was historic in that it presented a potent optic of peace and diplomacy between two leaders who'd traded nuclear threats just a year ago.

He also noted that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has clearly been identified to lead future negotiations with a North Korean counterpart and that Mr. Trump separately said National Security Adviser John R. Bolton "will be working on the denuclearization issue, which is very positive".

Annual military drills between the US and South Korea have been a major source of tension on the Korean Peninsula.

"The world will see a major change", he continued through a translator.

Although human rights was not included in the joint statement signed by Trump and Kim, the USA president said he raised the issue and he believed the North Korean leader wanted to "do the right thing".
