One sheriff's deputy has died and another is still in critical condition after they were overcome by an inmate while driving a transport vehicle near a courthouse in Kansas.

KSHB-TV reports the two deputies were transporting prisoners around 11:30 a.m. when they were "overcome" and were shot.

Authorities say one of the deputies was killed in the shooting.

An inmate overpowered two sheriff's deputies while being transported to a Kansas City courthouse on Friday, resulting in a shooting that killed one deputy and critically wounded the other, authorities said.

The suspect, who also was shot, was in surgery at the same hospital. The other deputy had not been identified as of Friday evening, but was in critical condition at the University of Kansas Hospital. Police Officer Zac Blair told the newswire that no other suspects were being sought.

Wyandotte County Sheriff's Deputy Theresa King, a 13-year veteran of the department, has died following Friday's shooting.

The suspect is in the operating room at the same hospital, Zeigler said.
