President Donald Trump called the European Union a "foe" in an interview broadcast Sunday, a characterization he made due to their economie policies.
"I think the European Union is a foe, what they do to us on trade", Trump said when asked by CBS News' Jeff Glor who he thought the country's biggest competitor is. "Now, you wouldn't think of the European Union, but they're a foe", Trump replied.
Mr Trump said the U.S. has "a lot of foes" and named the bloc as one of them.
"Russia is a foe in certain respects", he said. China is a foe economically, certainly. "But that doesn't mean they are bad", he continued. "What they do to us in trade".
European Council President Donald Tusk (photo, left) took to Twitter, and in an elegant mocking of Trump's favorite phrase, declared, "America and the EU are best friends".
After Glor noted that the European Union was at the top of his list, Trump replied: "I look at them all". His mother was born in Scotland, while his father was born in NY.
In fact, Trump's father was born in New York City.

"Despite what you have heard from the fake news, I had a great meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel".
Trump repeated his previous assertion that the European Union has "really taken advantage of us on trade". Trump departed for Helsinki on Sunday evening after spending the day playing golf at his private club in Scotland.
"They're going to be paying Russian Federation billions and billions of dollars a year for energy, and I say that's not good, that's not fair", Trump told CBS. You're supposed to be fighting for someone and then that someone gives billions of dollars to the one you're, you know, guarding against. "I think it's ridiculous".
"Are they waving a white flag?" he asked.
