A gunman took hostages inside a supermarket in the U.S. city of Los Angeles on Saturday and shot one woman dead before handcuffing himself and surrendering.
Atkins was booked on a murder charge and was being held in lieu of $2 million bail, LAPD spokesman Officer Drake Madison said.
There was one fatality, police said.
Chief Robert Arcos of the Los Angeles Police Department told the Los Angeles Times that the gunman is barricaded in the store and that at least some bystanders are also inside, though the newspaper cited another source that said the gunman and the bystanders were in separate parts of the building.
"I miss my sister", Corado's brother, Albert Corado, wrote on Twitter. The woman killed in the Trader Joe's was identified as Melyda Corado, a family member told ABC News. A makeshift memorial of flowers, candles and notes grew on the sidewalk outside of the store on Sunday.
Trader Joe's called the attack the "saddest day in Trader Joe's history" in a statement on its website, saying the store would remain closed indefinitely.
Atkins's crime spree began hours earlier, Moore said, when he shot his grandmother multiple times during a heated argument at their home in South Los Angeles.
Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Margaret Stewart said a 20-year-old woman was transferred to a hospital in fair condition. She worked at the store for several years. She was never anyone but herself.
"He did not seem high on drugs, to me", Westafer said.
"Whenever he got into something, she'd go to his rescue", Egland explained.
Shoppers flee as shooter takes hostages at Trader Joe’s store in Hollywood, US
Officers with riot gear, armed with rifles, had stood along the side of the Trader Joe's and used mirrors to try to look inside as hostages periodically came out of the front door with their hands raised. But Egland said her grandmother did not want the suspect's girlfriend in the house.
According to police, the suspect then dragged his girlfriend, 20, into his grandmother's vehicle and fled the scene.
Police said the suspect shot his grandmother and girlfriend on Saturday before leading police on a auto chase that ended when he crashed into a pole and ran inside the supermarket as bullets from officers shattered the front doors.
Customers and employees dove for cover and barricaded themselves inside storerooms and bathrooms as bullets flew.
The suspect - who is believed to be 28-years-old - gave himself up after about three hours of crisis negotiations with police officers, the LAPD said.
As he heard gunfire, Sean Gerace, who was working in the back of the supermarket, grabbed several of his co-workers and the group made their way into an upstairs storage area.
'I grabbed an emergency ladder, barricaded the hallway, grabbed a weapon, put the ladder out the window and just tried to get the attention of the SWAT officer, ' Gerace told the television station.
The standoff inside the Silver Lake Trader Joe's dragged on for approximately three-and-a-half hours until Atkins finally surrendered without further incident at about 6:30 p.m.
Officials said about 40 store employees and customers were inside.
A gun was found in the store, police said.
