A warning is typically issued 36 hours before the anticipated first occurrence of tropical-storm-force winds, conditions that make outside preparations hard or unsafe.

NASA satellite imagery shows the hurricane is now in the Central Pacific Ocean southeast of the islands.

Residents will experience extremely powerful winds, heavy rain, storm surge and potentially even tornadoes and waterspouts as the hurricane progresses, according to a statement from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Weather Service. The hurricane is about 500 miles (804 kilometers) southeast of Honolulu.

Life-threatening weather conditions can extend well away from the center of the hurricane and interests throughout Hawaii are urged to closely monitor the progress of Lane over the next few days. Excessive rainfall could trigger widespread, life-threatening flash flooding and landslides; and risky rip currents along south, southeast and southwest facing shores.

"Tropical storm conditions are expected within the Hurricane Warning area beginning late tonight into early Thursday morning", forecasters say, "with hurricane conditions expected somewhere within the warning area on Thursday".

Hurricane Watches are in effect for the eastern half of the island chain, meaning hurricane-force winds are possible near the area within 48 hours.

On Tuesday, Hawaii residents scrambled to prepare for the storm's arrival. A hurricane watch is still in effect for Honolulu and Kauaʻi counties.

Bearing 155-mile per hour (250 km/h) winds, it threatened to dump as much as 20 inches (50 cm) of rain over parts of the islands, triggering major flash flooding and landslides. Note that the strands are clustered together where the forecast track is most confident, but they diverge where the course of the storm is less certain.
