Aretha Franklin's funeral in pictures

USA pop sensation Ariana Grande, 25, delivered a moving rendition of Aretha's iconic 1967 hit You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman.

They called her song "Respect" a "declaration from a strong confident woman who knows that she has everything". Seated behind the singer was former President Bill Clinton and Hillary Rodham Clinton as well as Rev. Al Sharpton and Rev. Jesse Jackson.

"We started out not as a president, a first lady, a senator, a secretary of State", Clinton said at a funeral service in Detroit for the performer known as the "Queen of Soul".

The daughter of a prominent Baptist preacher and civil rights activist, Franklin sang at the funeral of Martin Luther King Jr., as well as the inaugurations of presidents Clinton and Barack Obama.

She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Republican then-president George W Bush in 2005. So, if we were anywhere near where we were going to be playing, she would just show up. Franklin, who died earlier this month at age 76, is being celebrated Friday in her hometown of Detroit, Michigan.

Clinton said that before he and his wife were famous politicians, they were simply an "Aretha groupies".

In the wake of Franklin's death, several country singers have offered up tribute performances in honor her lasting impact on music.

According to Knight, she and Franklin spent much of their historic careers together.

Mayor Mike Duggan announced at the service that he meant to have the city's riverfront Chene Park renamed in Franklin's honour.

Her coffin is to be entombed on Friday in Detroit's Woodlawn Cemetery near the remains of her father; her brother, Cecil Franklin; and her sisters, Carolyn and Erma Franklin.
