Donald Trump warns Democrats against probes and mocks Republicans who lost seats

Democrats have promised to hold oversight hearings on the Trump administration when they take control in January.

Some races were still too close to call early Wednesday but even with Democrats winning almost 30 seats, the result clearly fell far short of Republicans' worst fears of losing 40 or more.

High voter turnout for Democrats was widely expected but less expected was that Republican enthusiasm for this midterm vote was not all that diminished. The final count is likely to leave Democrats with a narrow majority that could be hard to manage and preserve.

Trump briefly sought to strike a statesmanlike tone in his first public remarks after the loss, praising House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi for her hard work and envisioning "a attractive, bipartisan type of situation" on infrastructure investments and healthcare.

'Seeing as The House of Representatives have the power to impeach, the Democrats now have the numbers to push it through if they can find just cause.

"It's about restoring the constitution's checks and balances to the Trump administration", Pelosi told a news conference. That included 10 states Trump won handily in the 2016 presidential election.

The House Ways and Means Committee is expected to subpoena Mr Trump's long-hidden tax returns amid suspicions the billionaire has paid minimal amounts for years and possibly expose hidden foreign ties.

These figures show that the thorough rejection of Trumpism that the Democrats have been hoping for - and which might convince his party to change course - has not arrived and is not likely to arrive soon.

Ayanna Pressley was elected as Massachusetts' first black congresswoman.

Democrats celebrated a handful of victories in their "blue wall" Midwestern states, electing or re-electing governors in Michigan, Pennsylvania, Minnesota and in Wisconsin, where Scott Walker was defeated by state education chief Tony Evers.

During the campaign, Pelosi urged candidates to focus on lowering health care costs and creating jobs with infrastructure investment, and she tamped down calls for impeachment.

The vote was seen as a referendum on the president, even though he is not up for re-election till 2020.

Trump's team immediately sought to give him credit for retaining their narrow Senate majority, even as their foothold in the more competitive House battlefield appeared to be slipping.

Although his odds have lengthened slightly, Trump remains the man to beat say the bookies.

The Democrats, in turn, benefited from extraordinary voter enthusiasm, robust fundraising and unusually fresh candidates.

Emanuel, who as a member of Congress oversaw his party's takeover of the House in 2006, said he has no doubt that what took place yesterday in House races was a rejection of the President, especially given the strength of the economy and the degree to which congressional district lines favour the Republicans. Nine women won governorships, tying a previous record. They included New Jersey Sen.

But before it can become the law of the land, Congress must ratify it, either by a majority vote by both houses or two-thirds of the Senate. He predicted an "invasion" from the migrant caravan making its way toward the US and decried the "radical" agenda of speaker-in-waiting Pelosi.

He and Pelosi, the Kentucky senator said, are "not unfamiliar" with one another as longtime leaders and colleagues.

Trump also has sent soldiers to the Mexican border and threatened to have illegal immigrants shot if they throw stones.

One of Trump's most vocal defenders on immigration, Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, lost his bid for governor.

And outside Richmond, Virginia, one-time tea party favorite Rep. Dave Brat lost to Democrat Abigail Spanberger, a former Central Intelligence Agency operative motivated to run for office after the GOP vote to gut the Affordable Care Act. Democrats have represented no more than a quarter of rural districts ever since.

He singled out GOP Representatives Mike Coffman of Colorado, Mia Love of Utah, Barbara Comstock of Virginia, Carlos Curbelo of Florida, Peter Roskam of Illinois, Erik Paulsen of Minnesota, John Faso of NY and Bob Hugin, who challenged Senator Bob Menendez of New Jersey. But 2010 - a historic wave year for Republicans - brought a seismic shift. "Some close races, some races that didn't go the Republican way, midterm elections - all those things come into play".
