Jimmy Butler trade: Timberwolves send G to Philadelpia 76ers

Sunday, 11 Nov, 2018

Jimmy Butler is finally on the move.

In return, the Timberwolves will get Robert Covington, Dario Saric and Jerryd Bayless, as well as a 2022 second-round draft pick. The Sixers have been considered one of the East's best, but the addition of Butler makes them competitive not only in the conference, but also in all of the National Basketball Association.

The Minnesota Timberwolves subsequently dealt the veteran to the Philadelphia 76ers.

The 76ers will also receive Justin Patton as part of the deal which gives Philadelphia a formidable looking Big 3 of Butler, Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons.

76ers coach Brett Brown talked before the season about the team shopping for a third superstar and they will get that with Butler.

Also according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, Thibodeau decided that a Butler trade needed to happen as soon as possible - following the Wolves' loss to the Kings on Friday night. Considering Minnesota has already identified its core, for better or for worse, gaining valuable complimentary assets like Covington and Saric strikes me as a bit of a coup, considering the offers they left on the table. After his well-documented trade saga started to stretch into the season and impact the Minnesota Timberwolves' ability to win basketball games, Tom Thibodeau and company decided to make a move.

The fact that the Timberwolves turned down four future first-rounders for Butler from the Houston Rockets and then traded him for no future firsts confused some people.
