Prosecutors to announce update in Johnny Bobbitt GoFundMe investigation

Friday, 16 Nov, 2018

Moved by Bobbitt's kind gesture, McClure and her boyfriend Mark D'Amico launched a GoFundMe page for the man, to raise money for a auto, rent on an apartment, and four to six months' worth of expenses. Bobbitt's attorney, Christopher Fallon Jr., did not immediately respond to our request for comment.

Instead of giving Bobbitt money for a house, the couple bought him a camper without his consent and kept him in it on their property with "no access to money or food", his lawyers alleged.

In numerous media appearances, McClure claimed she was driving to meet a friend in September 2017 when she ran out of gas around midnight on the I-95 exit ramp near Philadelphia and Bobbitt, who was sleeping under a nearby overpass, came to her rescue. Bobbitt reportedly believed the New Jersey-based couple was spending it on themselves, citing recent lavish trips, a new BMW, and some gambling.

Inspired by Bobbitt's selflessness, McClure and D'Amico launched a GoFundMe page with the goal of raising $10,000 to get him an apartment, a vehicle and cover four to six months of expenses.

The trio were charged with theft by deception and conspiracy to commit theft by deception, according to a statement of probable cause from the prosecutor's office.

Police in Philadelphia also arrested Bobbitt on Wednesday and said he was considered a fugitive of justice from Burlington County in connection with the case. In order to keep up the charade, the complaint says they prevented donors from learning information that would "affect their judgement" about the GoFundMe campaign, and failed to "correct their story".

Burlington County prosecutors told Fox they will hold a press conference at 2pm on Thursday and announce "a major development" in the case.

Scott Coffina announced criminal charges against the couple who told the story to newspapers and television stations along with the homeless man who allegedly conspired with them to tell it. "I had to make something up to make people feel bad".

The story went viral, and the campaign raised more than $400,000 from over 14,000 donations.

In light of the charges, donors to the Go Fund Me campaign are expected to receive full refunds, he added.

D'Amico, 35, and McClure, 28, turned themselves in to Burlington County prosecutors this week.

Bobbitt accused the couple of dipping into the funds for personal expenses and sued them over mismanagement. In September, the company gave Bobbitt $20,000 as part of the guarantee, with the rest of the $400,000 to be handed over pending an investigation.
