Emery told Spanish newspaper Marca in an interview this week that one of his main tasks was to rebuild Arsenal's defensive structure without losing the focus on attacking football that Arsene Wenger brought to the club.
"Nowadays it's very hard for a coach to stay 22 years", Emery said in an interview with Spanish sports daily Marca on Thursday. "I have spoken with him and I push him to give even more quality in matches, and keep up the good performances against big and small teams, home and away".
"I have said to myself it is a positive thing, but it can also be negative, that you are too heavy, want to interfere with the players a lot", Emery said.
Arsenal have announced that club captain Laurent Koscielny is set to make his long-awaited return in the next week.
The 33-year-old has been training with the Gunners for the last month, however, and Emery has said that the club captain could feature for Arsenal Under-23s at the start of next week.

Amazon finally reveals choice for its new headquarters
But the influx is sure to swell already-high home prices and apartment rents and could overwhelm public transportation systems. As word spread in the last few weeks that Crystal City was on the shortlist to land Amazon , housing demand has skyrocketed.
"Before Wenger arrived, Arsenal celebrated winning 1-0 and were based on defensive solidity", Emery said. "The process with him in this global break is to finish training with us every day to start playing, little by little".
With Arsenal battling in the Europa League, they are in a similar state to when Jurgen Klopp took over at Anfield in 2015.
Arsenal head to Bournemouth looking to close the gap on north-London rivals Tottenham, who are three points clear in fourth place.
And when asked what exactly needs to improve specifically, Emery said: "Everything". But the last three we have drawn. "We are conscious now it will be hard".
"We want to create that kind of atmosphere so it's about both how we finish in the table and also in terms of creating a team both individually and collectively that has motivation".
